There has been some interest shown in the Eastern Cape area for a Butterfly Sanctuary over the last few years, especially from the outlying areas of Port Elizabeth. Mrs Ruth Radcliff had obtained a property in Kragga Kama in the Kei area of the Eastern Cape for a Butterfly Sanctuary. Having already completed her basic COC Courses, she had to discontinue her dream for the Butterfly Sanctuary due to the death of her beloved husband. Ruth Radcliff has not been able to continue as she too has become ailing in health. The opportunity has become available to anyone who has an interest in the development of the intended Eastern Cape Butterfly Sanctuary (ECBS) in becoming either a partner in this venture with Conservation of Butterflies in South Africa (CBISA) or a sole owner. The estimated costs of the construction of the intended Butterfly Sanctuary is between 1.5 to 2 million Rand. The development is estimated to take a period of between 8 to 15 months (depending on local municipality and weather conditions). Estimated income from the venture is between 800 000.000 to 1.5 million Rand per month (taking into consideration all holidays and non seasonal times).
Eastern Cape Butterfly Breeding Centre
These are butterfly domes (Lepidomes) also referred to as Butterfly Breeding Centres in which butterflies are bred to be sold for butterfly weddings and all other functions. The releasing of butterflies in localised areas helps populate butterfly colonies and at the same time providing the owner with a reasonable monthly income. The lepidome is 12m x 6m x 2.4m high at its highest point. The cost of such a lepidome is approximately R 15 000.00. The construction of the lepidome is between 6 to 14 days (depending on weather conditions). Earning between R 15 000.00 to R 35 000.00 per month (depending on the month and availability of butterflies bred). These Lepidomes suite the areas in which there are either farmers or small land holdings.
Eastern Cape Butterfly Breeding Station
These are butterfly domes (Lepidomes) also referred to as Butterfly Breeding Stations in which butterflies are bred for educational purposes, such as schools, universities and businesses. These are usually hired out for the duration of the butterfly specie’s life cycle to the interested parties and maintained by the students for the duration of the breeding program. These lepidomes are 2m x 2m x 2m (small) or 3m x 3m x 2m (large). The costs of the Lepidome is between R 1 500.00 to R2 200.00. These are hired out for periods of 4 weeks to 12 weeks (depending of the species being bred) at a cost of R 50.00 per day with a deposit of R 1 500.00 to R 2 000.00 depending on the size of the Lepidome required. This provides an income of R 1 050.00 per month per Lepidome rented out. 10 such lepidomes rented out at the same time would increase your monthly income to R 10 500.00 per month.
